Presentation Description: In the fall of 2023, Duke faced a HUGE problem: Hundreds of students were studying abroad on the same three programs in Madrid, Florence, and Copenhagen. This post-pandemic participation shift caused countless academic, health and safety, housing, and personal issues. To stop this trend from skyrocketing further, Duke GEO decided to limit, or cap, Duke enrollment in these programs. In our first year of caps, we learned a lot of lessons and best practices. The data says we were successful in so many ways and met our goals for this major process change, but that success was not easy.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the benefits and pitfalls of implementing program enrollment limits
Discuss best (and worst) practices when implementing program caps
Determine if a program enrollment cap could work for your institution
