Beyond F and J Visas: Pathways to Employment-Based Green Cards

Presentation Description:

The F and J visas require the foreign national to have the intent to return to their home country once their program ends. In most cases, these individuals do not have a direct path to a green card and may look to their advisors for guidance on transitioning to live and work in the U.S. beyond their temporary stay. Advisors can benefit from understanding different green card options, current regulatory changes, and gain useful tips to share with international students that can help them transition from their temporary stay to legal permanent residency.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will understand employment-based green cards for F and J scholars and how to leverage OPT and STEM OPT as pathways to permanent residency effectively.
  • Attendees will recognize the advantages and challenges in transitioning from F and J status to an employment-based green card, enabling them to better support international students in their immigration journey.
  • Attendees will learn about current regulatory changes and gain useful tips to advise international students on transitioning from a temporary stay to legal permanent residency.
